01 Warning signs
Six signs your
roof needs us.
Caught early, most of these are a morning's work. Left for a winter, they turn into new ceilings and rotten battens.
Slipped slates
A slate out of line or a gap you can see from the street lets rain run straight onto the battens.
Damp patches
Brown rings on a bedroom ceiling, or damp in the corner of the loft after heavy rain.
Moss & lichen
Heavy moss holds water against the slates and lifts them over the winter frosts.
Sagging ridge
A dip along the top of the roof can mean tired timbers or loose ridge tiles.
Cracked tiles
Hairline cracks open up after frost and let water creep under the courses.
Draughty loft
Daylight through the roof from inside the loft is a sure sign the covering has failed.

Slates and tiles
Each slate is nailed and lapped over the two below. One slipped slate can leak for months before you see a stain.

05 Questions
Slate roof
questions.
01Should I repair or replace my slate roof?
If fewer than about one in ten slates are failing and the battens are sound, a repair is usually right. We show you drone photos and give you both prices so you can decide.
02Do you reuse my old slates?
Where they are sound, yes. Good Welsh slate can last more than a hundred years, so we sort and reuse what we can and match the rest.
03Will I need planning permission?
Not to like-for-like re-roof most houses. Listed buildings and conservation areas can have rules, and we check this for you before quoting.
04How long does a re-roof take?
Most terraces take three to five days on site once the scaffold is up. We sheet the roof every night so it stays watertight.
